Wed 29 - Tomb Raiding!
**Ring Ring** "Hello, this is your wake up call"! I wish now I'd been more polite to the guy on the phone other than grunting at him but hey, it was 04:00!
The idea was to head to the main Angkor Wat temple before sunrise and catch the sun coming up over it. Great plan, shame about the clouds! Still lead to some pretty good photos tho and the temples are superb especially taking into account how old they are.
In total I think we hit 10 temples through the day, from the huge main one to trekking through parts of the jungle to get to the really cool ones! The sight of the trees growing through them, vines living around them...for me it just added a character to them that couldn't be beaten. It's no wonder they chose these temples to film TombRaider in!
Everywhere you went in the temples there were little rooms all serving a different function and all had there own carvings in the walls. Supreme detail had been given to each one and it was great to see they had lasted over the years.
Now, I mentioned we had to go through part of the jungle, well, I've personally never seen spiders in the wild as big as the ones we saw on the webs there waiting to catch some food....or people!
All in all it was a hellishly early start and a long day but the variety of the places we saw was definitely worth it. Not sure I'll ever see anything the same on this scale again.
It almost felt wrong that we got so bloody excited at the sight of a group of monkeys stealing from a fruit seller and an elephant that came to say hello...I suppose that doesn't happen every day either!
An evening spent out in the town for some more good food and some bartering at the Market made for some good laughs. I also experienced my first every fish massage on my feet! The little bastards are bloody ticklish but it was actually quite good once you got used to it!
