Thu 30 - The Floating Village
Who needs roads when you have water! When we were told we were going to see a floating village I really wasn't sure quite how to expect it. In reality we boarded our tour boat at the beginning of a canal leading to a huge lake. Either side of the canal were house built on boats of all different shapes and sizes. They were different to our barges in the way that these actually looked like houses. It was fascinating to float down the canal seeing how the people lived and also to see what the community had achieved for itself! There were floating general stores, schools, pure water stations and my personal favourite, the floating basketball court!
We also stopped at one of their floating attractions to see their crocodiles and snakes, the snake made for a great photo!
I loved seeing how the young kids had adapted, in our country they have bikes, over here they were paddling round in large washing up bowls, one even had a snake in with her....as you do!
The Silk factory was up next and it was good to see how it was made first hand. From the way they get the silk from the worms right through to spinning it, dying it and weaving it. It really makes you wonder how they can make any profit on them given the time and attention that has to go into making them.
Tonight was to be the big night out in Siem Reap with the aptly named 'Pub Street' the destination. It cost me $6 for a jug of Vodka RedBull and a free t-shirt! Drink the entire thing through 5 straws probably wasn't my best move! Unfortunately for Mrs Tantram it proved to be an even worse move and after some food it was an early ish night for us! I guess we'll just have to come back another time and do it all again! :-)
